The Engineered Workforce: Hiring Manager Edition | Q3 2026

The Engineered Workforce (G7 Labs, Q3 2026) reports that engineering hiring didn't collapse under AI, it concentrated: openings per requisition rose from 1.33 to 1.78, engagements compressed to about six months, and the junior rung thinned as the seniority bar rose. Hiring managers will find relative pay premiums and typical engagement lengths for seven disciplines (DFT highest at 119, verification highest-volume), on-site vs. remote splits by discipline, regional concentration, and six planning changes to make before the next req opens.

The Market Changed In One Number

Two years ago the average engineering req asked for 1.33 engineers. Last year it was 1.50. This year it asks for 1.78. Companies stopped buying seats and started buying capability in clusters: when a program opens a verification req, it increasingly means two or three verification engineers, scoped and budgeted together.

That single trend reshapes how programs get staffed. A req that quietly represents three engineers has a different timeline, a different budget conversation, and a different risk profile when it sits open.


Engagements Are Shorter by Design, and Longer In Practice

Median scoped engagement for contracts starting in 2026 is 5.8 months, down from roughly 8 months for 2024 starts. Hiring managers are scoping tighter: contract-to-milestone instead of contract-to-year.

The scoping is not the whole story. On our active book, 35% of contracts have already run past 12 months, and those engagements average roughly 36 months end to end. Engineers get scoped for a milestone and kept for the roadmap.

What programs are billed for contract engineering is flatter than most hiring managers expect. Median bill rate by discipline, indexed to Mechanical at 100, from our 2025 to 2026 contract placements:

The scarce disciplines cost a few points more, not a few multiples more. The real premium on hard-to-fill skills shows up somewhere else: how long the seat sits open, and what that open seat costs your schedule. A verification seat that takes three months to fill through generalist channels costs a program far more than five index points ever will.

Where the Work Happens

Across the full book: 60% on-site, 11% hybrid, 29% remote. The averages hide the real story, which is discipline-level. Embedded and firmware work is 91% on-site because the hardware is in the lab. IC Design runs 78% remote because the tools are in the cloud. Anyone staffing these disciplines against a one-size location policy is competing for a fraction of the available talent.
