For Contract Engineers

Benefits for Contract Engineers
and What Game 7 Offers

A contract role is in front of you and the rate is real. Then one question stops the conversation cold: what about health insurance?

Your Four Options

COBRA, ACA, Spouse Coverage, or W-2 Staffing

Every contract engineer lands in one of these four buckets. Costs are honest ranges; your situation will vary.

OptionTypical Monthly CostBest For

COBRA

a bridge, not a plan

$450–$700 single · $1,000–$1,400+ familyA 30–60 day gap while other coverage starts. The 18-month cap kills it as a long-term plan.

ACA Marketplace

$400–$700 single · $1,200–$1,800 familyA single engineer comfortable with a high deductible. HDHP plans unlock HSA savings ($4,300 individual / $8,550 family, 2026). Subsidies phase out fast at engineer rates.

Spouse / partner coverage

Often the cheapest route, if availableA partner with employer coverage. Watch for the $100–$200/mo spousal surcharge before assuming it's cheapest.

W-2 staffing

Game 7

$231 on some Texas employee-only plans; otherwise buy up to other plans + tiersMost engineers stop worrying here. You're a W-2 employee, so you get employer-sponsored benefits built to match a Fortune 500 plan.

Option 4, In Detail

What a Game 7 W-2 Contract Includes

If you choose the W-2 path with us, here's the package. Benefits eligibility opens at 60 days; coverage goes live the first of the following month.

Medical

UnitedHealthcare · 6 plans

  • HMO, POS, and HSA-eligible plan types
  • Employee-only, spouse, child, or family tiers
  • Plans P1 and P4 available to Texas residents
  • HSA plans let you save pre-tax dollars for medical costs

Texas-based contractors: employee-only coverage on Plan P1 is provided at 50% of the cost to you. Dependent and family coverage is not free — dependents pay for their own plan.

Dental

Humana Dental PPO

  • 3 exams + 3 cleanings per year — 100% covered, no deductible
  • Basic services (fillings, root canals, extractions): 80% after $50 deductible
  • Major services (crowns, bridges, dentures): 50% after deductible
  • X-rays, fluoride, and sealants covered at 100%
  • $1,000 annual max + extended coverage at 30% after max

Dental coverage begins after the 60-day eligibility window. Once active, basic and major services are covered with no further waiting — most plans make you wait 6–12 months.

Vision

Humana Vision 100

  • Eye exam — $10 copay
  • Retinal imaging — $0
  • Lenses (single, bifocal, trifocal) — $25 copay
  • Frames — $100 allowance + 20% off balance
  • Contacts — $100 allowance + 15% off balance
  • Lasik / PRK discount via US Laser Network

Exam, lenses or contacts, and frames all covered once every 12 months.

401(k)

Betterment · Day-one eligibility

  • Contribute starting day 1 — no eligibility wait
  • Pre-tax and Roth (after-tax) options
  • Contribute by percentage or flat dollar amount, deducted weekly
  • 2026 limits: $24,500 standard / $32,500 (age 50+) / $35,750 (ages 60–63)
  • Change or stop contributions any time via Betterment
  • Plan admin and record-keeping fees paid by Game 7

No employer match currently. Investment management fee: 0.25% on assets.

This is optional, not required. Plenty of our contractors keep a spouse or marketplace plan they like and skip ours. We provide the option so the choice is yours.

If You Take the W-2 Path

Benefits Kick In at 60 Days

When your contract starts, your benefits clock starts too. You'll be enrolled and covered well before most other staffing firms even send you the paperwork.

01

Day 1

Contract starts. 401(k) available immediately via Betterment — no eligibility wait.

02

Day 60

Benefits eligibility window opens. Election forms go live; you choose plans for medical, dental, and vision.

03

1st of Next Month

Medical, dental, and vision coverage goes live. You're covered before most staffing firms even start the conversation.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do contract engineers get health insurance?

It depends on the engagement structure. W-2 engineers placed through a staffing agency are eligible for employer-sponsored coverage. 1099 and corp-to-corp engineers source their own through COBRA, the ACA marketplace, or a spouse's plan.

What is the real difference between W-2 and 1099?

On W-2, taxes are withheld and you are eligible for employer benefits. On 1099 or C2C, you pay the full 15.3% FICA rate, arrange your own coverage, and manage quarterly taxes. The 1099 rate is set higher to offset those costs, though the net difference usually comes out smaller than the hourly spread suggests.

Is COBRA worth it for contract work?

As a 30 to 90 day bridge between a full-time role and a contract, yes. For anything longer, the cost and the 18-month cap make it a poor long-term strategy.

How much does going contract cost in benefits?

Budget $800 to $1,500 a month for health coverage depending on the plan and family size, plus roughly 7.65% of wages in additional FICA above what a W-2 employee pays. Going W-2 through an agency with benefits closes most of that gap.

How are Game 7's contractor benefits different from other staffing firms?

For engineers, the difference is that the benefits exist and are worth using. Many firms place you 1099 or corp-to-corp and leave coverage entirely on you, and the ones that do offer a W-2 plan often offer a thin one. Game 7's W-2 package is built to match Fortune 500 expectations: six UnitedHealthcare medical plans, Humana dental and vision, and a Betterment 401(k) with day-one eligibility. For hiring managers, the difference is that none of this lands on your team — Game 7 is the W-2 employer of record for the engineer, which means we carry payroll, the employer share of FICA, benefits administration, and compliance.

Does Game 7 offer health insurance to contract engineers?

Yes. W-2 engineers placed through Game 7 are eligible for UnitedHealthcare medical with six plan options, Humana dental and vision, and a Betterment 401(k) with day-one eligibility. Coverage goes live the first of the month following your 60-day waiting period.
