A Decade of Trust: Game 7 Staffing and Northrop Grumman

Over 11 years, Game 7 has placed 49 engineers at Northrop Grumman. The partnership began in September 2014, and those placements span 16 distinct engineering role types. It's the longest client relationship in our portfolio.

If you run a cleared program, you already know how fast the pool shrinks once a clearance goes on the req. This is what cleared engineering staffing took to keep a top defense contractor covered through that, year after year.

The client

Northrop Grumman Corporation develops aerospace and defense systems for the U.S. military and allied governments, and its work extends into cybersecurity. It is one of the five largest U.S. defense contractors. The engineers we placed worked on classified systems in those areas.

The challenge

Staffing for a top defense contractor is a different job from staffing for a commercial semiconductor company. Four things made it harder here.

Clearances shrink the pool before the first call

Many Northrop Grumman programs require an active Secret or Top Secret clearance, or higher. The pool of engineers who hold one and also bring deep FPGA or ASIC verification experience is extraordinarily small. Our recruiters will tell you that most of those engineers are invisible to firms that don't already have relationships in the defense engineering community.

ITAR and compliance add another gate

On this account, export control rules under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), along with facility clearance requirements, meant every candidate had to clear scrutiny well beyond a standard background check. As our recruiters describe it, one compliance gap can put a whole program at risk.

The breadth of need runs wide

The programs span digital FPGA, ASIC verification, EDA tooling, PCB layout, power conversion, mechanical and test equipment at the same time. A partner has to cover all of it, or the program ends up managing several vendor relationships, and each one adds risk.

Success is measured in years

A contractor who leaves after three months is a program disruption. Defense programs need engineers who can embed in long-duration technical work and be trusted with classified information over multi-year spans.

From the hiring side, the stakes are plain. A cleared engineer who leaves mid-program does not get backfilled quickly. The recruiters who staff these seats point out that clearance processing alone can take six months to a year. The real cost of a failed placement shows up in the program schedule.

How Game 7 staffed it

We have worked in the defense engineering talent market since 2014. The cleared network behind this account was built through years of relationships with engineers who hold active clearances and stay engaged in the defense community.

Screening happened before anyone met the hiring team. Every candidate who reached an interview had already been checked for clearance status and ITAR eligibility, so the interview could focus on the engineering.

We filled 16 distinct role types in six discipline families, and ASIC and verification led with 30 of the 49 placements. FPGA design accounted for 8, software and EDA for 4, hardware design for 3, test engineering for 2 and mechanical for 2. That breadth came from one partner, which meant one relationship for the program to manage.

Engineers who stayed

Seven of our Northrop Grumman engineers stayed embedded for more than eighteen months, across assignments that ran between 2017 and 2025. The longest single assignment lasted 5 years 11 months. That's the kind of continuity defense work asks for.

The funnel

Northrop Grumman extended 57 offers to candidates who reached interview, and 49 engineers were placed. That puts interview to hire at 45.0% across the engagement. On offers alone, 49 of 57 were accepted, so Northrop Grumman's own offer acceptance rate on this engagement was 86.0%.

Placement volume moved with the programs. 2017 brought 9 placements during a major program ramp. 2020 was the peak year with 14 placements, delivered through COVID.
