Thanksgiving Week Interview Math: Uneven Travel-Week PTO

By Jason Eisenberg · Head of Marketing2 min read
Quiet office row at low sun with empty desks and monitors; a backpack and jacket left at one station while warm light cuts across the room.

Unlike a planned December shutdown, Thanksgiving PTO is uneven and rarely blocked early. Sequence offers before the week of Nov 16 collapses.

You can feel Thanksgiving coming in the calendar before anyone says the word. Half-days stack up. Flights appear in Slack status lines. The DV lead chasing coverage, the DFT principal in ATPG, and the firmware owner still in the lab each vanish on a different day.

That shape is not a planned shutdown. It is something messier, and it is why offer velocity dies in November if you treat Thanksgiving like December.

Uneven, Unblocked Travel-Week PTO

A planned December shutdown usually shows up on the shared calendar weeks ahead. People block the building. MSP queues slow on purpose. You can plan around a dark week because everyone agrees the week is dark.

Thanksgiving travel-week PTO behaves differently. It is unevenly distributed across your panel. One interviewer is out Tuesday through Friday. Another is "traveling Wednesday, maybe back for a Friday screen." A third never blocks anything and then disappears the afternoon before the holiday. Most of that time was never marked as out on the calendar you were using to schedule offers.

The week before Thanksgiving (Thu Nov 26, 2026) is when panels evaporate without a memo. Someone always thought they still had Thursday. Someone always discovers the badge appointment cannot move. Someone always tries to salvage a start by adding soft screens into the holes.

Why Offer Velocity Breaks Under That Shape

Offer velocity needs contiguous decision time: shortlist locked, technical signal collected, offer approved, candidate still engaged. Uneven PTO punches holes in that sequence without giving you the clean "everyone is gone, resume in January" clarity of a shutdown.

If you are aiming at a first-week-of-December start, the useful lock point is early the week of November 16, or by Tuesday, November 17 at the latest. Waiting until the Monday of Thanksgiving week is how you discover that the two people who could approve the offer are both on planes.

We already walked the longer freeze math in count backward from freeze, including badge and clearance lead time. This post is not that math again. It is the Thanksgiving-specific calendar shape: unblocked travel days that still remove your decision-makers.

What to Protect Before the Week of November 16

Lock the shortlist while your interviewers are still in the building. Run the technical depth you still need while the people who own the work can show up. Get the offer path named: who signs, who needs MSP, who owns badge timing.

A shrug at "who can still approve on Wednesday the 25th"… means fix that before you add another soft screen. Thanksgiving does not reward volume. It rewards a sequence that survives missing people.

Interview design for scarce hours lives in shortlists when the panel gets thin. Use that when you need scorecards and async depth. Use this post when you need to respect that travel-week PTO will not announce itself the way a December shutdown does.

Many teams interview three or four engineers for every offer they make. We're at two in three. Under Thanksgiving PTO, that gap matters more, because you do not get make-up panel days the way you do after a planned shutdown.

If you already know which December starts cannot slip, walk the Thanksgiving calendar with us before the week of November 16 turns into improvisation.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

When Do Thanksgiving Panel Decisions Need to Be Locked for a December Start?

Aim to lock shortlist and offer-path decisions early the week of November 16, or by Tuesday, November 17. Thanksgiving week itself is for closing what is already in motion, not for inventing a new loop.

How Is Thanksgiving PTO Different From a Planned December Shutdown?

December shutdowns are usually blocked and shared. Thanksgiving travel-week PTO is uneven, often unblocked on calendars, and removes decision-makers on different days without a single dark-week memo. Plan for holes, not for a clean stop.
