- Hardware design standardized on USB Type-C creating too much firmware work for the current team of two.
- Compounded by the hiring manager's upcoming paternity leave.
End Product:
- Firmware for hardware built around USB-C Power Delivery controllers across three different SOCs, shipping production-quality embedded firmware.
Tech/Domain Environment:
- Embedded C, bare-metal firmware
- ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers
- USB-C Power Delivery controllers, Cypress / Infineon MCUs
- I2C, SPI, UART low-speed intra-IC buses
- Multimeter, logic analyzer, oscilloscope
Job Duties:
- Bring up new hardware systems and PCBs by validating power, clocks, and connecting debuggers
- Develop bare-metal embedded C firmware for USB-C Power Delivery controllers on ARM Cortex-M MCUs
- Configure and interface with low-speed intra-IC buses like I2C and SPI for peripheral companion ICs
- Implement and debug USB-C and USB-PD power negotiation, source, sink, and DRP roles
- Debug live hardware and firmware at the bench using multimeters, logic analyzers, and oscilloscopes
- Collaborate closely with hardware EE engineers to isolate and resolve hardware and firmware issues
Must Haves:
- Strong embedded C development experience on 32-bit microcontrollers
- Working understanding of USB-C and USB-PD source, sink, and DRP roles and power contract negotiation
- Experience with I2C, SPI, and UART peripheral communication and debugging
- Hands-on hardware bring-up and debugging experience using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and multimeters
- Schematic and datasheet literacy for register configuration and pin/power confirmation
Nice to Haves:
- Specific experience with Cypress or Infineon MCU SDKs and middleware such as ModusToolbox
- Prior work with Infineon EZ-PD or Cypress CCGx PD controllers
